In the past, overusing "exact match" anchors worked extremely well and was used as a shortcut by many SEO experts to achieve high search engine rankings in a relatively short period. However, since Google's infamous Penguin algorithm update in 2012, doing so has been a surefire way to shoot yourself in the foot and be penalized by search engines. 

DO: Prioritize backlink quality over quantity.

Quality matters a lot in SEO. Anyone can use automated tools to create thousands of spammy backlinks, but this will kill your rankings faster than you can say "cheese." The ones you want to aim for are usually the most difficult to obtain.

DON’T: Worry about keyword density (too much)

Keyword density is another SEO metric that used to be important, but its importance is now minimal at best. Yes, it's important to mention your main keyword at least a couple of times, but exceeding 2% in terms of keyword density may result in your content being flagged for "keyword stuffing." Just don't do it – Google is now smart enough to understand what your content is about because it can understand its intent.

DO: Consistently build backlinks.

As a general rule, it's much better to spread out your backlinks over time rather than trying to get everything out there in a single day. It's also normal for your search engine rankings to fluctuate while you're doing this, so there's no need to panic. If your website is brand new, your chances of witnessing this phenomenon are even higher.

DON'T: Participate in link exchanges.

You may feel obligated to link back to someone if they have linked back to you out of courtesy. In reality, however, this could jeopardize your SEO efforts. Google isn't a big fan of link exchanges; it prefers to see people naturally linking to you.
